What Does Tracheostomy Stand for ?


A tracheostomy is a complicated surgical procedure. It elevates the beginning with a small operation, an opening is made into the trachea also known as windpipe low in the neck, a tube is placed there. It guarantees a clear pathway of air/oxygen into the lungs and an outer route of exit for secretions. In most cases, tracheostomy is a temporary procedure. It is supposed to be removed after a few days or weeks. How to maintain Tracheostomy care at Home ?


Communication is a bound entity during the tracheostomy care at home. The outer cannula is not to be removed unless asked to do so.

To check-in with the tracheostomy tube, first

wash your hands properly and put your gloves on whenever you feel ready.

Suction the trach tube and remove the inner cannula.

If your tube has an inner cannula, remove it.


Hold it above the basin and incubate it with hydrogen peroxide. Use normal saline or tap water to rinse it and then dry it inside-out. With careful hands, rinse the inner cannula with either saline or tap water.


Insert the inner cannula again and remove the soiled gauze dressing around the neck. Now with the help of swabs, clean the exposed parts of the outer cannula and use the washcloth to remove the hydrogen peroxide and clean the skin. The outer cannula is to be dried with the skin around the stoma following the change of the trach tube ties ahead.
